Biography
biography Sérgio de Barros Godinho, better known as Sérgio Godinho, was born in Porto on August 31, 1945. Sérgio Godinho is a Portuguese poet, composer, performer and also actor. At just 20 years old, Sérgio Godinho left his degree in Economics and went abroad. The first destination was Switzerland, where he studied Psychology for two years; At that time, he had among his teachers Jean Piaget. He then moved to France, living in May 1968 in the French capital. The following year, he was part of the French production of the musical “Hair”, where he remained for two years. In Paris, he collaborated with other Portuguese musicians, such as Luís Cília and José Mário Branco. In 1971 he made his recording debut with the release of the E.P. Romance de Um Dia na Estrada, which was followed by his first L.P., Os Sobreviventes. Three days after its release, the album was banned, then authorized, and then banned again. Nevertheless, the album was voted «Best album of the year» and Godinho received the Press award for «Best author of the year». In 1972 Sérgio presented a new album, Pré-histories, which includes one of the most emblematic songs of his career, A Noite Last. In 1973 Sérgio Godinho moved to Canada, where he married Sheila Charlesworth, his colleague at the theater company The Living Theatre. He was part of the Génesis theater company. He settled in a hippie community in Vancouver and it was there that he received news of the 25th of April Revolution, which led him to return to Portugal. Sérgio Godinho is known as “The Man with the Seven Instruments” and is multifaceted: he has acted in films, television series and plays. Dramaturgy emerged with the signing of some theater plays, also assuming himself as a director.
