biography Tarantula is a Portuguese heavy metal band, formed in 1981 in Porto by brothers Luís and Paulo Barros (guitar and drums, respectively). The band is considered one of the oldest and most respected in Portuguese metal, having released several albums and sharing the stage with international bands such as Manowar, Deep Purple or Motorhead. The band started out called Mac Zac and sang in Portuguese, having participated in the Santo António dos Cavaleiros Heavy-Metal Festival in 1984. In 1985, they changed their name to Tarantula, after two concerts in Germany, and added vocalist Carlos Meinedo, guitarist João Wolf, bassist José Baltazar and keyboardist Serafim Paiva. In 1987, they released their first album, Tarantula, on the label Transmédia, which sold out shortly after its release. The album showed its influence from classic metal and hard rock, with songs such as "Power Tower", "Battle of Victory" or "The Lost Crown" and the band played several concerts across the country and Europe. In 1989, Jorge Marques joined as vocalist and Ricardo Amorim as guitarist, replacing Meinedo and Wolf. The band signed with Polygram and released their second album, Kingdom of Lusitania, in 1990, which launched them to international fame.
