Biography
biography Nelson Freitas is a singer, composer, producer and sound technician of Cape Verdean origin, who stands out in the Portuguese-speaking Afro-pop music scene. He was born on April 4, 1975, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, where he grew up with his family. He developed his passion for music from an early age, influenced by his idol Michael Jackson and by zouk, R&B, hip-hop and coladeira rhythms. Nelson Freitas began his artistic career as a break dancer, joining groups such as Rock Steady Crew. He also danced for his uncle Johnny Ramos, a famous Cape Verdean rapper. In 1997, he formed the group Quatro, with Nilton Ramalho, Nelson Oliveira and Adilson Ben David. The group mixed pop, zouk and R&B and released three albums: 4 Vôz (1998), Bem Consché (2002) and Última Viagem (2006). The group had several hits, such as “Si Bu Kré”, “Kazanga” and “Ritmo d’Amor”. In 2006, Nelson Freitas released his first solo album, titled Magic. The album featured hits such as “Deeper”, “Something Good” and “Rebound Chick”. The album also received the CaboMusic-Award in 2007 for best zouk album. In 2010, he released his second solo album, titled My Life. The album featured hits such as “Nha Primere Amor”, “Bo Tem Mel” and “Saia Branka”. The album also received the CaboMusic-Award in 2011 for best kizomba album. In 2013, Nelson Freitas released his third solo album, titled Elevate. The album featured hits such as “Bem Pa Mi”, “Simple Girl” and “Drinks on Me”. The album also received the CaboMusic-Award in 2014 for best kizomba album. In 2016, he released his fourth solo album, titled Four. The album featured hits such as “Break of Dawn”, “Nha Baby” and “Miúda Linda”. The album also received the CaboMusic-Award in 2017 for best kizomba album. Nelson Freitas is one of the most talented and versatile artists of the new generation of Cape Verdean music. It mixes several musical styles, such as kizomba, zouk love, R&B and dancehall. He is also a music producer and has his own recording studio in the Netherlands called Blue Blood Music, where he produces and supports new talents in Cape Verdean and African music.
